Fostering Inter-Cultural Dialogue through Sport

Save the Dream organised a special session during 7th United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) Global Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan to share experiences on the role of sport in enhancing peace, sustainable development, inclusivity and integration in society.

In April 2016, Save the Dream organised a special session during 7th United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) Global Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan to share experiences on the role of sport in enhancing peace, sustainable development, inclusivity and integration in society. The event chaired by Pedro Velazquez, Save the Dream Director Social Innovation and Empowerment called for more organisations to use sport as a tool for social integration and inclusion and to highlight the importance of promoting the positive values of sport to young people.
Influential figures including football legend Christian Karembeu, the first-ever Palestinian female football captain Honey Thaljieh, Secretary General of Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan Elkan Mammadov, Syrian refugee and football coach Osama Abdul Mohsen and peace activist Nelsa Curbelo joined the session to share their experiences on how sport has transformed their lives and played an important role in enhancing society.
The Forum leaded to the adoption of a final declaration commending the UNAOC High Representative’s efforts to incorporate sports programming as human expressions of intercultural bridge-building.
The first follow- up action took place in October 2016 when, jointly with the Turkic Council and UNAOC, Save the Dream convened a special session on “Sports as a Means to Prevent Violent Extremism” during the conference “The Role of Youth in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE): Holistic Approaches, From Education to De-radicalization” which took place in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Conference was attended by high level representatives from government, international organisations and civil society. The special session was chaired by Massimiliano Montanari, Executive Director of Save the Dream, and involved Fikret Orman, President of Beciktas J.K., Sergey Danilenko, Secretary General of the World Ethnosports Confederation and Kashif Mumtaz Siddiqi, international football player and Founder of Football for Peace
